Key points from Bernanke's speech. On the economy

August 31, 2012
  • Stagnation in the labour market is a "grave concern" and that high unemployment may "wreak structural damage".
  • Housing, Europe, and the 'fiscal cliff' pose headwinds.
  • The labour market improvement has been painfully slow and that the economic situation is "far from satisfactory".

  • On quantitative easing, he says:
    • He sees "strong" odds that QE "will make money" for taxpayers.
    • The Fed would "act decisively" in removing stimulus.
    • A big boost in QE may reduce confidence in smooth exit.
    • QE may impair the functioning of the securities markets.
    • The Fed will boost accommodation as needed for growth.
    • Using nontraditional policy tools is challenging.
    • QE mitigated the risk of deflation.
    • QE provided "significant help for the economy".
    • Gauging the impact of QE on the economy is inherently difficult.
    • QE helped fuel sustained recovery in US stocks.

    GBP/USD AT OVERSOLD LEVEL

GBP/USD closed at 1.5655 on Friday. This level is very important to watch. If you look at the chart below, you will see that GBP/USD tested this level few times this year and then bounced back towards 1.5950 areas where it found some kind of resistance.

Now, the question is what it will do this time around?

Technically, we will be expecting some kind of bounce from this level next week for two main reasons. First, it's been proven that this level is strong support for this pair and also currently, it's in oversold territory. Next week is short week for U.S market due Memorial Day holiday. So, volume will be thin. We have neutral bias on this and will wait for confirmation before taking any long position. Daily close above 1.5700 will give some reason to buy. Below 1.5600 will give bears more reason to sell.

    Yen "Carry Trade" in play..

Yen "carry trade," investors are borrowing money in yen, where rates are low, and exchanging it for currencies in countries where rates are high—such as Australia, Canada and Mexico—profiting from the difference. Investors can also execute a carry trade by borrowing the lower-yielding yen to buy bonds denominated in higher-yielding currencies, such as local-currency government debt in places like Mexico and Brazil.

    EURO Predictions by largest banks

None of the leading FX forecasters see the Euro imploding, in fact JPMorgan see it finishing at 1.35 v the dollar..

The 17-nation currency lost 2 percent after erasing a gain for the year as recently as November. The most-bearish forecaster sees the euro at $1.17, while the most optimistic call is for a rally to $1.45 by mid-year. The median of the 40 estimates is $1.30 by 2013.

    Predictions

    Wells Fargo – $1.24

Nick Bennenbroek, who is the head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo & Co. topped the list for the third time in five quarters as measured by Bloomberg Rankings. He expects the euro to drop in the first six months to $1.24, from $1.2961 at the end of 2011

The European Central Bank will continue to ease aggressively in 2012 as recession approaches in Europe and the U.S. numbers remain resilient. All the fundamentals strongly argue for euro weakness.

    Westpac $1.20

Westpac Banking Corp. have the second-lowest margin of error for two consecutive surveys, they predict $1.20, as measures by the European Central Bank fail to keep the region’s sovereign-debt crisis from worsening.

Even with a euro forecast that bounced from $1.37 to $1.24 in 2011, Bennenbroek and Wells Fargo senior strategist Vassili Serebriakov’s belief in the superior U.S. growth gained them the best overall margin of error of 3.98 percent across 13 currency pairs in the six quarters ended Dec. 31.

    Overseas Chinese Banking – $1.35

Oversea-Chinese Banking was the fourth-most accurate forecaster for the second consecutive quarter and had the second-lowest margin of error on the euro versus the dollar. It expects the euro to strengthen to $1.35 by the year end.

    National Australian Bank – $1.25

    National Australian Bank forecasts the euro ending the current quarter at $1.25. Rob Henderson, chief economist for markets at fifth-ranked National Australia Bank, said by phone from Sydney on Jan. 5;
The differential between the economic performance of the U.S. and Europe will contribute to some negativity on the European currency. We also expect that the ECB will in one way or another be running looser monetary policy whereas the Fed is pretty comfortable at the moment with keeping policy where it is, so that’s another negative for the Europeans.

    J P Morgan – $1.34

John Normand, the London-based global head of currency strategy at JPMorgan. Normand, expects the euro to gain to $1.34 by the end of the second quarter.

The ECB will not make a bargain explicit, but we suspect they will increase debt purchases if reform legislation is implemented. Coupled with lower interest rates the euro should stabilise, then rebound.

    AUD/USD NEAR IT'S TRENDLINE RESISTANCE

AUD/USD came very close to it's long term upper trend support which is currently working as resistance. It broke this support and close below it on Sept 23, 2011. Now it's back again to that resistance level of .9960/70. If it close above it then probably short term down trend is over for this currency pair.
World economy is not out of the woods yet. Euro solved some temporary issues but long term still not clear.
We will watch this level for AUD/USD and short the pair if it fails to close above the level.
    Watch:
    .9960/70 for resistance.

    U.S. Dollar Index - Outlook For Jan 10 - Jan 14

U.S. Dollar Index closed at 81.13 on Friday. This is just shy off Nov 30th high of 81.44. Last time U.S. Dollar Index fell from that level to as low as 79 on Dec 3rd, 2010.

Technically, it's a short term resistance.

Next week will be very interesting to see if it can break above that level. If it does then we expect U.S. dollar index to go as high as 83.55 which is August 24th high and can act as a very strong resistance.
RSI is not at overbought level. So, there are possibility to move further up in coming week.

Last week, we got mixed economic data came out of U.S. Next week, we will be watching mainly Fed's Beige Book Economic release which is due on Jan 12th and also U.S. retail sales. These two report will give pretty good idea of current U.S. economic outlook and will move dollar accordingly.

EUR/USD Outlook for the week of Jan 3rd. to Jan 7th, 2011

EUR/USD closed at 1.3354 after a three days rally at year end.

Euro zone countries still facing challenges going to 2011 with sovereign debt crisis. Now, investors are waiting to see who is next to ask for bailout Portugal or Spain? Rating companies keep threatening for downgrades and they have some countries in watch list for next month. Things are not pretty for Euro going to 2011.

Let’s keep the fundamental problem on the side and let’s look at the technical side of Euro/USD for coming weeks.

From our technical analysis, we see the first resistance at 1.3428 which is Dec 3rd and Dec 13th high. If you look at the chart below, you will see that Euro/Usd fell from that level every time it touched. On Dec 31st, it went high to that level and then closed below it. Also, there is a near term resistance at 1.3467 which is 38.2% of fibo retracement from 1.4280 – 1.2970.

We will take a bullish position, if Euro/Usd close above 1.3467. Next resistance will be at 1.3621 which is 50.0% fibo.

On the lower side, we see the first support at around 1.3120.

    BEST OF LUCK IN 2011!

    Next Week Currency Watch EUR/GBP

EUR/GBP closed at a very important level of .8502. Why it is important? Because that level acted as a resistance on July 19, 2010 and then it fell from that level to .8150 before it bounced back to .8900 in October 2010. This is also just above 20SMA and the mid point of Bollinger band. MACD showing oversold and there is a sign of reversal. Last but not least, .8502 is very close to 50% fibo retracement of .8538 which also can act as a short term resistance.

Our strategy: Take long if daily close at or above .8538. TP will be .8610 and SL below .8470

    EUR/USD Outlook Remains Bearish , November 19, 2010

The latest slide has finally stopped after ending a sequence of consecutive daily lower highs, and it seems the market starts the process of correcting the latest major 1.4285-1.3445 move. While there is certainly room for additional upside movement from current levels (1.3715), our outlook remains bearish following the break below 1.3700 several days ago. The 38.2% fib retracement off of the latest move comes in by 1.3760, with the level also offering itself as the midpoint between the 10/20-Day SMAs.
STRATEGY: Sell is set at 1.3760 or 1.3780 for an Open Objective; STOP is set at 1.3850.

EUR/CAD Opportunity You Don't Want To Miss....

EUR/CAD bounced back from it's oversold position on Friday. It closed @ 1.3823. Weekly low was 1.3658.

CCI and Bollinger band both showing rebound from oversold position but still in negative position.

Euro was under much pressure last week on speculation that Ireland was on the verge of a EUR 80b bailout from EU and IMF. The rumors sent CDS on peripheral Eurozone countries to record high, as well as respective bond spread with benchmark German bund. Nevertheless, the rumor was denied by Irish finance ministry on Friday. Investors were also worried that Germany will push forward measures to have bond holders sharing the burden in future bailout of countries in fiscal problems. But investors were then calmed down by a joint statement by UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain that "any new (bailout) mechanism would only come into effect after mid-2013 with no impact whatsoever on the current arrangements".

If no new bad news comes out of Euro next week, we will expect Euro to rally against CAD. We will be looking for a long position on any pullback from this level.

We closed last week with +190 pips profit and our Managed account gained +4.3% for the month of October.
